Is The Scandal of Chunhwa Korean Drama Worth Watching?

The Scandal of Chunhwa

When The Scandal of Chunhwa was first announced, it generated significant buzz. The trailer looked promising, and with Go Ara as the lead, I had high hopes. Having enjoyed her previous dramas, I expected an engaging storyline, strong performances, and a well-crafted period drama. However, after watching the first two episodes, I was left utterly disappointed.

A Story Lost in Sensationalism

One of the biggest issues with The Scandal of Chunhwa is how confusing the plot is. Instead of immersing viewers in a compelling historical narrative, the drama seems more focused on excessive nudity and sexual content. The first two episodes revolve around these elements so much that the actual story becomes secondary. This raises the question: were these scenes necessary, or were they simply included to attract attention?

As someone who has watched over 400 K-dramas in the past ten years, I have never come across a drama so poorly executed. While Korean dramas have evolved over time, it seems that some productions now believe explicit scenes will automatically make a series popular. Unfortunately, The Scandal of Chunhwa proves that this approach doesn’t work when the storytelling is weak.

Lack of Chemistry and Weak Execution

Another major disappointment is the lack of chemistry between the leads. Even in the most underwhelming dramas, there is often some redeeming quality—be it character development or engaging relationships. But here, nothing clicks. The interactions between the main characters feel forced, making it hard to invest in their journey.

A Drama Not Worth Continuing

After two episodes, I don’t think I can bring myself to watch the rest. The direction The Scandal of Chunhwa has taken is frustrating, and I have no desire to see where the story goes. While some viewers might still give it a chance, for me, it’s one of the worst dramas I’ve encountered.

K-dramas have long been known for their strong storytelling and emotional depth. However, Chunhwa seems to have prioritized shock value over substance, and that is where it ultimately fails.
